The Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative is a partnership with the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business and the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative, the purpose of which is to strengthen principle-based ethics education and foster a high standard of ethics in young people, according to their website. The Ethics Initiative works to integrate ethics instruction throughout the curriculum that includes real-world practical applications, provides exposure to business practitioners, and maintains relevance to the ever-changing business environment. Each year, instructors across campus are nominated to receive one of eight David Eccles School of Business Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Leadership in Ethics Education Awards, and Professor Rodrigo Noriega of the Department of Chemistry is one of their newest recipients. The awards are presented to educators who significantly enhance the teaching of ethics in their classes and/or engage with student organizations to foster the involvement of students in ethical issues. In each case, the award recognizes the incremental contribution to ethics education both inside and outside of the classroom.
Professor Noriega was nominated for his efforts to put ethics at the heart of his courses at the University of Utah, including CHEM 5570-001, Research Ethics, a course originally designed by Professor Jon Rainier. Professor Noriega’s contribution to teaching ethics by using innovative methods to get across key ethical concepts are recognized with the Leadership in Ethics Education Award, which includes a plaque, medallion, and monetary award. He will be recognized at the David Eccles School of Business awards ceremony in spring 2019.
