Application Information

We look forward to receiving and reviewing your application! For all questions related to graduate admissions in the Department of Chemistry—during or after submitting your application—please contact us.

Application Process

Apply using the University of Utah Graduate Admissions Application. Follow the instructions on the application site to submit the following required documents. Please refer to the document guide below for further assistance, simply select the corresponding tabs.

Admission Requirements

  • Graduation with a recognized four-year degree
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • English proficiency scores (International students only)

  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • English proficiency scores (INTL only)
  • Statement of Purpose

Application & Acceptance Dates

  • For priority consideration, completed applications should be received by December 1. Applications received after that date and until February 1 will be reviewed in an ongoing basis.
  • By agreement with other U.S. universities, we ask that you make your decision to ACCEPT our chemistry graduate offer by April 15.

Application Help

    • The application fee for the Chemistry PhD is $55 for Domestic applicants and $65 for International applicants.
    • DOMESTIC APPLICANTS
      • Contact our program for an application waiver code:

      • Application fee waiver codes are program specific and data entry errors or codes created by other programs will not be honored or credited.
    • INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
      • International application fee waiver is NOT available for Fall 2024 class prior to applying
        • We require you to cover the application when applying. Upon your admittance into our program we will reimburse this cost.
      • International students must pay the application fee in order to consider your application complete. Applications will not be reviewed until all required documentation and materials are received.
      • Faculty and departments are not able to provide or sponsor application fee waivers for international students.
    • Are GRE scores required when applying?
      No, GRE scores are not needed for Fall 2024 applicants
    • Do I need to find a research advisor before applying?
      No, however, your research interests should align with our research offerings. Learn about what is happening in our department here.
    • Do you admit students to the Master's (MS) program?
      No, accepting applications for prospective PhD students ONLY
    • What financial support opportunites are available to prospective students?
      The Department participates in the fellowship program “Enhancing Diversity and Graduate Student Success” (EDGES) of the College of Science. More information about the EDGES fellowship and how to apply can be found here.
